What you Need to Know about Guardianship: The Basics - 6/1/2012 from 9:00 am -Noon

Sooner or later, all of us, whether it is professionally or personally, will be faced with a situation in which an elderly person is no longer able to meet their basic needs of providing for their own food, clothing and/or shelter. You have perhaps become acquainted with someone who has begun to have difficulty keeping up with their financial obligations, their medical appointments and personal hygiene. This training will provide basic information regarding alternatives to guardianship, who needs a guardian, the guardianship process, the role and responsibilities of the guardian and how to best advocate as a guardian. Guardianship are not only for the elderly but may also be in the best interest for young adults with intellectual disabilities, who are turning eighteen years of age, individuals with brain injury or stroke. Living with Dying: Studying Faith, - 6/22/2012 from 9:00 am-Noon

Faith, faith development, shame and hope are important topics for fragile men and women who are in hospice and dealing with their end of life issues. The author met with 10 men and women who agreed to talk about their faith and faith development as they shared how they used their faith and how their faith development across various life events. This group of ten individuals who were dying held a hopeful view of their “living with dying” as most had dealt with life experiences tied to shame. The findings from this small mixed methods study will be the basis of further qualitative interviews as services provided to individuals at the end of life would benefit from this information. Mental health professionals working with older adults are encouraged to bring faith and faith development, hope, and shame into the conversations with these individuals. Additional therapeutic strategies will be explained and discussed in this presentation. This author will look at Integrative Therapy; especially Narrative, and Cognitive-Behavioral approaches.
